What kind of support can SEAAC provide?

Information, Advice and Referral

SEAAC caseworkers provide individual support to migrant and refugee young people and their families around particular issues. Casework may involve: a comprehensive assessment of the settlement needs of the young person/family; and the development and implementation of strategies to address those needs, for example: practical help (e.g. filing in forms, enrolling in study), information, referral (e.g. help with legal information), and support.

 

Homework Support Program

SEAAC runs two valuable Homework suppport program aimed at young people from CALD backgrounds. The program offers support from tutors who can help students in a range of subject areas.

Volunteer tutors are available to help migrant and refugee students with their homework at studies at:

 

Springvale Neighbourhood House Tues 4 - 6pm, 46 Queens Ave

Springvale Learning and Activities Centre Thu 4 - 6pm, 1 Osborne Avenue

Orientation to Australia

Provision of culturally and linguistically sensitive orientation/life skills information to newly arrived refugee and migrant young people. In order to inform and empower them, new and emerging communities are offered community talks from guest speakers about issues relevant to them, such as health, housing, migration, tracing lost family members and job hunting. Agencies that have been guest speakers in the past include Department of Human Services, Consumer Affairs Victoria, local councils, legal centres and the police.

 

Support for Youth-Led Organisations

SEAAC provides assistance to community groups to become self reliant through:

  • Provision of information
  • Linking to mainstream services and organisations which potentially have the capacity to provide various forms of support
  • Increasing access to resources by the provision of both, guidance and practical help, in applying for funding. 

 

Who Do We Work With?

We can provide support if a young person is:

  • Newly arrived (up to 5 years) and/or has come from a refugee or migrant experience;
  • 12-25 years old;
  • Living, working or studying within the municipal boundaries of the cities of Monash, Kingston, Dandenong Casey, Frankston and Cardinia.
  • Having difficulty at home or school, or needs support.

 

How Do I Make a Referral?

Self Referral: People can self refer by presenting in person and making a time to speak with one of our workers.

Phone Referral: Indivduals and/or workers can contact SEAAC workers by phone on 9563 4130 to refer to one of our programs.

 

Sport and Recreational Opportunities

SEAAC aims to run a number of sport and recreational activities aimed at youth each year. In the past these have included;

  • Youth camp
  • Soccer tournament
  • Trip to football
  • Swimming
  • Canoeing

Community Education

SEAAC is available to run worskhops and community education on topics relevant to young people from a CALD background and also informative workshops aimed at those that work with CALD youth, these workshops are aimed at raising awareness of issues relating to CALD youth.
